During our last Steering Council meeting, the Amazon Alliance was asked to track the World Bank’s work on climate change and ensure that indigenous peoples’ rights are fully respected. Since then, the World Bank has refused to publicly recognize any shortcomings in its involvement of indigenous peoples in designing the future of their forests in the Bank’s Forest Carbon Partnership Facility. They have reported to the world that indigenous peoples were fully consulted in the design of their plans, and have entered into agreements with the governments of Guyana and Bolivia without the knowledge or consent of indigenous peoples who own and manage the forests affected by these agreements.
On September 16th, the Amazon Alliance Coordinating Office submitted a public letter to the President of the World Bank that explains some of the concerns of our Steering Council, and demands real solutions. This letter is being circulated to the press and the general public.
The Amazon Alliance Coordinating Office is grateful for the support of Rainforest Action Network, one of our member organizations, for collaborating with us on this initiative. RAN has created an “Action Alert” that the public can use to express support for the Amazon Alliance letter and COICA Climate Change Declaration presented to the World Bank.
